When I read this passage, it felt like a prayer I have prayed many times before.
David has just been told that God is going to establish his house and his kingdom. It is a huge promise. A moment where David could have easily focused on the future, the legacy, the power.
But instead he goes and sits before the Lord and says something incredibly simple. Something I often feel to the core when I look at my family and God's faithfulness.
Who am I... and what is my family... that you have brought us this far?
David is not asking for more.
He is not trying to prove himself.
He is just recognizing.
Everything he has is because God brought him there.
That line hits me every time.
There are moments in life where you stop and look around and realize how far God has carried you. Not because you planned it perfectly or earned it, but because He was faithful through every part of the journey.
And the only honest response is something like this.
Who am I, Lord?
It is not false humility. It is awe.
A realization that God has been writing a story bigger than anything we could have arranged ourselves.
Reading this made me pause and say the same thing.
Lord, who am I, and what is my family that you have brought us this far?
