“All right then,” Jonathan told his armor bearer. “We will cross over and let them see us.”
1 Samuel 14:8 (NLT)
I think I highlighted this verse because I had forgotten the story.
That’s it. No big explanation. No immediate takeaway.
I had forgotten how this moment unfolds. How Jonathan, without an army or approval, decides to move. He doesn’t wait for perfect conditions or a clear outcome. He doesn’t ask for permission or even ask his dad.
He just moves.
Reading it again felt like remembering something I once knew but had forgotten. I actually couldn’t wait to see how the story unfolded. It had some twists I didn’t see coming… the honey part especially.
This verse reminded me that sometimes highlighting while reading the Bible is not always about insight. Sometimes it is about remembering. Remembering a story. Remembering a picture of faith that slipped out of my mind.
I feel like I know the Bible. I’ve heard the stories. I’ve even taught them in children’s ministry. So coming across one that I wasn’t really familiar with anymore was interesting.
I read about Jonathan’s courage, and it didn’t come from certainty. It came from trust.
His plan wasn’t loud or strategic. It was simple.
We will cross over… and let God determine what happens next.
That line carries the weight of action. Faith that moves without guarantees. Faith that doesn’t need a crowd.
I think I wanted to remember that.
Not every highlighted verse has to explain something. Some just remind us of who God has been and how He has worked before.
And maybe that is enough.
