Highlighted: 1 Kings 13:23

"After the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had brought him back saddled his donkey for him."1 Kings 13:23 (NLT)

This is just one verse from a whole disturbing chapter.

If you have not read 1 Kings 13, stop and go read it before you keep reading this. It is short. It will not take long. And it is one of those chapters that will sit with you for a while.

Here is the short version.

A young prophet is sent by God with a clear word and clear instructions. Do not eat. Do not drink. Do not even go home the same way you came.

On his way back, an older prophet meets him and invites him over. The young prophet says no at first. He remembers what God told him. But then the older prophet lies and tells him an angel said it was fine to come eat.

So he goes.

And later in the chapter, God takes his life because of it.

I know how that sounds. It feels harsh. It feels like it does not fit.

But this chapter really resonated with me a few years ago, and it has stayed with me ever since.

Because how many times have we done the very same thing?

God tells us something. We know what He said. We have read it. We have prayed about it. We have felt the conviction in our gut.

And then someone comes along who sounds more spiritual. More religious. More seasoned. Someone with a bigger platform or a louder voice or more years in the church.

And they tell us something different.

And we listen to them over Him.

That is the part that stopped me.

We would rather listen to a man than to God.

This is exactly why being in the Word matters so much. Not a book about the Word. Not a podcast about the Word. The actual Word.

And it is why a real relationship with God, the kind where you know His voice for yourself, is not optional.

It is the only thing that will keep you steady when someone who looks the part tells you it is okay to do the very thing God already told you not to do.

There is one more piece of this chapter that I think matters.

The older prophet, the one who lied, was not the one who paid for it. The young prophet was.

The person leading you astray may walk away just fine. You are the one who has to live with the consequences of who you chose to listen to.

Stay in the Word.

Know His voice.

Do not hand your faith over to anyone, no matter how spiritual they look.

Where in your own life have you been tempted to trust a person over what God has already said to you?
