1 Chronicles 17:16 — Heather Lyn Wilson
Highlighted

I read the entire Bible in January. Now I'm revisiting my highlights and blogging about why each verse stood out.

1 Chronicles 17:16

"Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed, 'Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?'"1 Chronicles 17:16 (NLT)

I highlighted this one and then realized I had already written a highlighted blog about almost the exact same verse in 2 Samuel 7:18.

They are nearly word for word. Accounting of the same story. Told twice.

But I highlighted it again, when I got to it the second time. And I think there is a reason it stuck out to me again.

David sits down in front of God after hearing this huge promise about his family and his line, and the first thing out of his mouth is not thank you. It is not I deserve this. It is a question.

Who am I? What is my family? Why would you bring me this far?

He goes on to say you speak as though I am someone great. You know what I am really like, and you still show me and my family favor.

That is the part that stops me every time.

You know what I am really like.

He is not pretending. He is not standing in front of God acting humble. He knows himself. He knows his failures. He knows the parts of his story that should have disqualified him. And he is sitting in front of God in awe that none of it stopped God from using him.

That is humbling in a way that goes deep.

Because thousands of years later, sitting at my kitchen table reading this, I feel the same thing.

Who am I that God would even want anything to do with me?

He knows me. He knows what I am really like. He sees the things I have done and the things I have thought and the things I would not say out loud. And He still uses me. Still shows me favor. Still includes me in what He is doing.

That is not small.

I think that is why this verse keeps standing out in my reading. Because it is one of those truths I cannot soak in just once.

The God of the universe chooses to use us.

Not because we are great.

Not because we have it together.

But because that is who He is.

And every once in a while, you just have to sit down in front of Him like David did and say it out loud.

Who am I, that you would bring me this far?

When was the last time you sat down in front of God and just let yourself be amazed that He chooses to use you at all?
