I read the entire Bible in January. Now I'm revisiting my highlights and blogging about why each verse stood out.

Psalm 2:12

"Submit to God's royal son, or he will become angry, and you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities—for his anger flares up in an instant. But what joy for all who take refuge in him!"Psalm 2:12 (NLT)

When I read this, I was honestly trying to figure out who it was talking about.

The whole psalm builds up to this royal son. The one the nations are raging against. The one God has installed as king. The one people are told to serve with fear and rejoice with trembling.

Was this about David? He was Israel's king. He was God's chosen one. He was a son in that sense.

Or was this about Jesus? The ultimate King. The Son of God. The one all the prophecies were pointing to.

The more I thought about it getting ready to write this, the more I realized it is really about both.

David was a shadow. Jesus is the substance. This psalm was written during David's time, and it applied to him in his role as king. But it was pointing forward the whole time to a greater King who would come and reign forever.

That is one of the coolest things about the Old Testament. So much of it is layered. It meant something in the moment. And it meant something far bigger down the road. God was writing His story in a way that would echo for generations.

But the part of the verse that stood out to me is not just who it is talking about.

It is the two options.

Submit or not.

Take refuge or not.

That is really it. The whole verse boils down to a choice. And the choice is stark.

There is no middle ground here. There is no sort of following. There is no I like Jesus but I do not want to actually surrender to Him. There is no I will take the refuge but skip the submission. The verse presents it as a fork in the road.

You bow to Him and find joy.

Or you do not, and you get consumed by your own life.

That last part is interesting to me. It does not say you will be destroyed by God's wrath in some dramatic thunderbolt kind of way. It says you will be destroyed in the midst of all your activities.

Right in the middle of what you were building.

Right in the middle of your own plans.

Right in the middle of your own life.

That is such a picture of what happens to people who refuse to submit. They keep going. They keep working. They keep achieving. They keep building. And in the middle of all of it, something is crumbling underneath them. The activities are still there. The success is still there. But the destruction is happening quietly, right in the middle of the noise.

And on the other side of the verse is the promise.

What joy for all who take refuge in him.

Joy. Not just safety. Not just survival. Joy.

That is what is on the other side of submission.

Not a duller life. Not a life stripped of everything good. A life full of the kind of joy you cannot get any other way. The kind that runs deeper than circumstances. The kind that shows up even in hard seasons. The kind that is anchored to a King who is worth trusting.

I want that.

I want to be someone who takes refuge in Him. Not just talks about Him. Not just quotes Him. Actually runs to Him. Actually hides in Him. Actually lets Him be the King of every part of my life.

Because the two options are real.

Submit or not. Take refuge or not.

Have you actually chosen? Or have you been trying to live somewhere in between?
