This verse is short. But it is a whole sermon if you let it sit with you.
If you want wisdom, fear the Lord.
If you want understanding, forsake evil.
That is it. That is the equation.
We talk a lot about wisdom in our world. People want it. People chase it. People listen to podcasts and read books and follow leaders trying to get more of it. We talk about being wise with our money, wise with our time, wise with our relationships, wise with our health.
But we rarely talk about the actual source of it.
The Bible is not vague on this. The fear of the Lord. That is where wisdom starts. Not gathering more information. Not getting more degrees. Not learning more strategies. Wisdom begins when we have a right view of who God is.
And we get the second half wrong too.
Real understanding is not just knowing things. It is not being well read. It is not having the smartest take. The Bible says real understanding is forsaking evil. Actually walking away from the things that are wrong. Not just knowing they are wrong. Actually leaving them.
We forget that part.
We can know what is right and not do anything about it. We can have the verse memorized and the wrong thing still happening in our life. We can talk a great game about what is true while quietly tolerating things in our own lives that God has been asking us to forsake.
That is not understanding. That is just information.
But what does this actually look like in real life?
I think we hear the phrase fear of the Lord and assume it just means being scared of Him. And sometimes we soften it even more and say it means respect. But it is more than either of those.
The fear of the Lord is a posture.
It is walking through life with the awareness that God is real. That He sees. That He knows. That He is holy. That His opinion matters more than anyone else’s. That what He says is true even when the whole world is telling me otherwise. That I will one day stand before Him and give an account.
It is making decisions with Him in mind.
It is not getting away with things just because no human sees.
It is taking His Word seriously instead of just being moved by it for a second on a Sunday.
That kind of fear is not the kind that paralyzes us. It is the kind that anchors us. It keeps us from drifting. It keeps us from compromising. It makes us go wait, what would honor God here? before we make a decision.
And that is wisdom.
The other half is just as practical.
To forsake evil is to actually walk away from the things God has called sin. Not just to feel bad about them. Not just to confess them and keep doing them. To actually stop. To put it down. To not pick it back up. To turn around and go a different direction.
That is hard. I am not going to act like it is easy.
But the Bible is saying that is where real understanding lives. In the actual leaving of the wrong thing, not just the knowing of it.
And here is the encouraging part.
You do not have to figure out wisdom on your own. You do not have to build it from scratch. It already has a source. Fear the Lord. Walk away from evil. Wisdom and understanding will start to grow in you, because you are positioned where they actually come from.
So much of our anxiety and confusion in life comes from trying to be wise on our own terms while we hold on to things God has been asking us to let go of. We feel stuck because we are.
The way out is the same as it has always been.
Walk with God. Walk away from the things that pull us from Him.
