1 Chronicles 1:19 — Heather Lyn Wilson
Highlighted

I read the entire Bible in January. Now I'm revisiting my highlights and blogging about why each verse stood out.

1 Chronicles 1:19

"Eber had two sons. The first was named Peleg (which means 'division'), for during his lifetime the people of the world were divided into different language groups. His brother's name was Joktan."1 Chronicles 1:19 (NLT)

I do not usually highlight much in the genealogies.

There are just a lot of names. A lot of so and so begat so and so. I read them, but I do not always stop.

But this one made me stop.

One man named his son Peleg, which means division. And during that son's lifetime, the people of the world were divided into different language groups.

That is the Tower of Babel.

This little verse, tucked into a long list of names, is sitting right on top of one of the most significant events in early Bible history.

And it leaves me with so many questions.

Did they name him knowing it was going to happen? Did God tell them ahead of time, the way He had spoken to others?

Or was Peleg already born and growing up when the languages were divided, and they renamed him to mark the event?

Or was it the other way around. Did they name him Peleg first, and then the division happened, and people looked back later and said, that name was prophetic?

It is kind of like the chicken or the egg.

Today we just pick names because we like the sound of them. Back then, names meant something. Names carried weight. Names were tied to who you were, what was happening when you were born, or what God was doing in your family. A name was not just a label. It was a statement.

So whoever named this child Peleg knew exactly what they were saying.

I do not know which came first.

But I love that even in the middle of a list of names, God left a thread for us to pull on. A little hint that there is more going on than just lineage. That every name on that list was tied to a real moment, a real family, a real story.

It also makes me wonder how much of my own life is being marked by God in ways I do not see yet. The little details. The timing of things. The names of seasons I am walking through.

What looks like a list of names to us was somebody's whole life.

And every one of them mattered to God.

Have you ever looked back and seen God's fingerprints on a season or a moment you did not pay much attention to at the time?
